Android App

Survey mobile signal.
Access the platform in the field.

The Mastdata app lets you capture real-world signal strength data on any journey and — with a subscription — access mast maps, coverage tools, and planning information wherever you are. Survey data feeds directly into the live coverage maps that power the platform.

Data & privacy

We want you to know exactly what the app collects, why, and who can see it.

What is collected

  • GPS location — only during active signal surveys
  • Mobile signal strength, network type and operator
  • Cell tower identifiers (LAC, CID)
  • Device model, manufacturer and OS version
  • A randomly generated anonymous device identifier
  • IP address and Android serial number
  • Account email address (registered users only)

How it is used

  • Generating anonymised UK mobile network coverage statistics
  • Delivering the coverage maps and infrastructure tools you subscribe to
  • Allowing survey results to be accessed across multiple devices
  • Maintaining and improving the app and portal
  • Meeting legal and regulatory obligations

Readings are stored on your device and uploaded in batches roughly every 60 seconds. Typical data usage is 1–5 MB per hour of active surveying.

Who sees it

  • Mastdata staff, for service operation and support
  • Licensed customers (e.g. network operators) under formal data agreements — they cannot identify, contact or profile you individually
  • Anonymised, aggregated summaries may be shared more broadly
  • Your data is never sold to advertisers or unrelated third parties
  • All data is stored and processed in the United Kingdom

Registered users can submit a data erasure request from their User Profile page in the portal. For all other data rights requests email privacy@mastdata.com with “Data Subject Request” in the subject line. Full Privacy Policy →

Common questions

Does the app track my location all the time?+
No. Location data is only collected when you actively start a signal survey within the app. If you turn off the screen while a survey is running, the app may continue collecting in the background so the survey can be completed accurately — but this only happens while survey mode is active.
What happens if I use the app without an account?+
You can use the core signal survey features without a login. Results are stored locally on your device. Without an account, your data is linked only to a random anonymous identifier generated on first use — not to any email address or personal information.
Is my data sold to advertisers or third parties?+
No. Your data is never sold to advertisers or unrelated third parties. Signal data may be shared with licensed customers such as mobile network operators, but only under formal data agreements that explicitly prohibit them from identifying, contacting or profiling individual users.
How much mobile data does the app use?+
Very little. Readings are uploaded in small batches approximately every 60 seconds. A one-hour survey at typical driving speeds uses around 1–2 MB on a single SIM device. In the most intensive scenario (dual SIM, minimum scan interval, motorway speeds) usage reaches approximately 5 MB per hour — similar to one hour of turn-by-turn navigation.
How does the app affect battery life?+
Running a survey uses more battery than idle use because the app keeps GPS active and polls the radio hardware at regular intervals. In practice a one-hour survey uses roughly 10–20% of a typical modern smartphone battery — similar to turn-by-turn navigation. Turning the screen off once a survey is running is the simplest way to reduce battery consumption.
What permissions does the app require?+
Location (GPS), phone state (to read network and signal information) and network access. Location permission is required for accurate measurements and mapping. You can manage permissions at any time through your Android device settings — removing location permission will prevent the survey feature from functioning correctly.
Where is my data stored and processed?+
All data collected by Mastdata is stored and processed within the United Kingdom, using UK-based infrastructure. No data is routinely transferred outside the UK.
Can I request deletion of my data?+
Yes. Registered users can submit a data erasure request from their User Profile page in the portal. If you do not have an account, or prefer to contact us directly, email privacy@mastdata.com with "Data Subject Request" in the subject line.
